My Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy can be summed up by a combination of these two quotes by Thomas Carruthers and William Butler Yeats. My role as teacher is to supply my students with the essential tools of learning that encourage them to become independent thinkers and instill inspiration by presenting lessons with enthusiasm. This includes providing a foundation of knowledge and supplying techniques to aquire further knowledge independently. It also involves creating a learning environment that engages students while imparting facts, skills and ideas, gives them an opportunity to explore their genuine curiosity and fosters the qualities in them that will help them succeed as productive citizens.

I don't see children as the proverbial sponges, and me as the one holding the bucket of "knowledge" for them to "soak up" . Because, sometimes when you put a sponge in a bucket of water, it just floats on the top! I believe all students are capable of learning. The amount of learning is mostly dependent on the amount of effort that the student is willing to put into learning. As the saying goes..."You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink!" The key is to make it want to drink.

My objective is to create a spark of interest in them to engage in learning. I am not a filter of information, but a facilitator. I facilitate in helping students aquire and practice learning skills that are useful and meaningful to them in a way that promotes them continuing on their own.

Education is a journey in which I am merely the guide whose job it is, ironically, to make herself unnecessary to her students. I can't wait to watch them spread their wings and fly.
